Machine Translation vs Human Translator

Machine translation is no longer a vision of the future but a reality. This attitude was expressed at the GALA 2020 international conference of localization services and translation that was held online this year. No matter how skeptical translators may be about machine translation, they may need to fundamentally reorient themselves, change the nature of their work, and start using machine translation systems to achieve the new level of optimization in their daily works.

Translation Tools and Machine Translation

In order to adapt the new technologies in daily life and ordinary tasks, people must change their thinking first. For a long time, the translator was just someone who remake a text into another language. This was followed by various translation tools that made the job of translator easier. One of the most popular translation tools has been the SDL Trados so far. This one and other similar translation programs help to store translations in memory, so when the similar texts are translating later, the program itself finds the best matches and offers them to translators. This is an effective help for a translator as it allows to choose the same terms used in the translated text before.

Such translation tools should not be confused with machine translation systems. Translators who use translation tools must translate texts themselves, but they can use the database provided by the program to find matches. Machine translation is able to translate the text automatically. However, as machine translation systems evolve, translators may still need to change the nature of their work. The system will automatically translate the text, and the translator will need to review it, check the logic of the text, and watch out of stylistic errors. Of course, the higher the quality of the machine translation system is, the easier the work of a translators will be.

Disadvantages

So far, the systems of machine translation are not perfect. Some translators who have tried to work with machine translation systems claim that they spend twice as much time for correcting and editing a text, so it is easier to translate the text by yourself than to edit a text that was translated by the machine translation system. Of course, there will always be texts that no machine translation system can translate. It should not be forgotten that the result also depends on the quality of the source text when the machine translation is used. If it is not correct, the translation will be difficult to understand and will have a poor quality.

As translation systems improve, many people and companies will be able to translate casual texts with the help of machine translation systems. Even today, machine translation systems translate texts of some easy topics with considerable quality. Companies can also save money on translation costs if the translation system is adapted to their needs, so it means that the machine translation system will be fed with millions of specialized terms and texts, and trained to translate texts in the field that is required by a client.
